Tesla Sets Delivery Window for Cybercab Sales

Tesla has scheduled Cybercab deliveries for the end of 2026, though most units will be retained for its own robotaxi service.

Tesla has set a delivery window for its Cybercab, a two-seater vehicle built without a steering wheel or pedals, bringing a definitive timeline to when customers can purchase the autonomous unit. The company intends to begin delivering units to customers before the conclusion of 2026. The announcement comes as Tesla works to scale the vehicle for public use, though the company has indicated that the vast majority of these units will be retained for its own operations.

The timeline for the vehicle's development has moved steadily toward the goal of autonomous transportation. Production on the Cybercab line at Gigafactory Texas commenced in February of this year. By early September, Tesla launched public rides through its robotaxi service using early units. During the third-quarter earnings call held on October 21, the company addressed the schedule for private sales of the vehicle.

During the call, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy addressed the production schedule directly. He stated that the company is working to provide Cybercabs to customers by the end of 2026. However, Moravy noted that the units currently being built are being diverted to the company's internal robotaxi fleet. He added that as operations scale, the company will deliver fully autonomous vehicles to customers, with the Cybercab serving as the first such model. The initial batch of deliveries to customers will be limited in size as the company develops the logistics necessary for fleet management and operating autonomous vehicles outside its direct control.

CEO Elon Musk clarified the intended business model for the vehicle, distinguishing it from the company's personal ownership cars like the Model 3 or Model Y. Regarding the Cybercab, he stated that the vehicle is intended as a transport-as-a-service offering. He noted that the vast majority of Cybercab units will be owned by Tesla for this service.

The vehicle relies entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite to operate. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI, indicated during the call that unsupervised Full Self-Driving is expected to ship to consumer cars during the second quarter of 2027. Consequently, early buyers or fleet operators may receive vehicles whose autonomous operation is limited by geography due to regulatory agencies that are lagging behind. There are hurdles that remain ahead of Cybercab deliveries.

As of late October 2026, the company is preparing to move the Cybercab from its internal testing fleet to external customers. While the schedule for these deliveries is set for the year's end, the process of selling the vehicle to consumers will begin on a small scale.
